GONZALES — The Gonzales Police Department is warning residents against a scam in which callers claim they’re from the IRS and have filed suit against the resident.
Charlotte Guedry, a spokeswoman for the Gonzales Police, said the IRS doesn’t call taxpayers, rather it sends letters on IRS letterhead.
Guedry said the IRS doesn’t sue people. As a federal agency, it has the authority to assess a tax liability and may place levies on a taxpayer’s assets and garnish income.
If someone receives a call, the Gonzales Police Department recommends they call the state Attorney General’s Office, (800) 351-4889.
