GONZALES — A St. Amant woman was given five years of supervised probation and ordered to make restitution after she pleaded guilty earlier this week to embezzling thousands of dollars from the Big Ben Rent World furniture store.
Shannon Desira, 40, 44165 Bayou Blvd., will go to a restitution hearing Oct. 13 to determine how much she should pay back to her former employers.
Desira, who was at the Parish Courthouse Annex on Monday in Gonzales in street clothes, pleaded guilty to one count of theft greater than $25,000 from the South Burnside Avenue store.
Company officials and Gonzales police claimed at the time of her arrest in October that she had stolen more than $200,000 over nearly six years while she was a store manager.
Police claimed Desira, who was in charge of payroll and accounts payable, changed payroll records, eliminated deductions from her own paychecks and gave herself extra, unearned paychecks. Police said Desira admitted to the theft but disputed the amount stolen.
The plea agreement Desira entered Monday before Judge Jason Verdigets, of the 23rd Judicial District Court, says restitution is to be determined.
Under the plea deal, Verdigets gave Desira a five-year prison sentence that was suspended and then backed it up with an equivalent term of supervised probation.
Company officials said at the time of her arrest last year that she was fired in August 2014.
