Assumption Parish sheriff’s deputies on Saturday arrested a Bayou L’Ourse man accused of taking his 5-year-old daughter hostage and shooting their family dog.
After staying up all night drinking with a friend, Danny Ray Reding fired his .22 caliber revolver four times, shooting his dog, a bulldog-pit bull mix, Sheriff Mike Waguespack said in a news release. Reding also fired one shot in the direction of his friend, whom he did not hit, deputies said.
Reding then locked himself and his 5-year-old daughter in an upstairs bedroom, authorities said. When deputies arrived, Reding tried to flee and suffered a cut on his hand from the knife he was holding, the release said.
Reding’s daughter was rescued unharmed and the dog survived the gunshot injury, deputies said.
Reding, 161 Elaine St., was booked into Assumption Parish Prison on counts of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, cruelty to juveniles, cruelty to animals, carrying of firearm by convicted felon, illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrument and resisting an officer.
