A 33-year-old man is dead after he was shot in the parking lot of a Paincourtville bar Sunday morning, the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

The suspected shooter, Matthew Jordan III, 25, turned himself in to deputies several hours after the victim, Franky Joseph, 33, of Donaldsonville, died, Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack said.

The shooting occurred when Joseph and Jordan got into a fight just before 12:30 a.m. at the Alexis Sports Bar on La. 308, Waguespack said. Joseph was shot once in the abdomen with a handgun. No one else was injured, and investigators suspect only one shot was fired.

Joseph was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Assumption Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff said.

“I think these guys do have a history of altercations,” Waguespack said of Joseph and Jordan. “They know each other and have had some problems in the past with one another.”

Witnesses identified Jordan as the shooter, Waguespack said.

The sheriff said he could not say what led to the fight and whether the two men were intoxicated.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will perform the autopsy.

Jordan, 3230 Wire Lane, Donaldsonville, was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on one count of second-degree murder, Waguespack said.

The investigation is ongoing, and Capt. Darren Crochet is the lead detective.

Investigators are still interviewing witnesses.
