The Ascension Parish Assessor’s Office will host a series of community informational meetings as part of Assessor M.J. “Mert” Smiley’s community outreach.

The first meeting will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Geismar Community Center, followed by meetings March 12 at the Darrow Community Center and March 20 at St. Amant Park, Nell Ervin, of human resources and public relations in the Assessor’s Office, said in a news release.

Book signing Saturday

Donaldsonville native Curtis Celestine is holding a book-signing event from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Donaldsonville.

Celestine will have copies of his book, “Glimpses of Black Life Along Bayou Lafourche,” on sale. Proceeds from Saturday’s book sales will be donated to the River Road African American Museum, museum director Kathe Hambrick Jackson said.

The book describes experiences of black people who lived throughout the Mississippi River and Bayou Lafourche regions from 1875–1975.

Recycling event planned

The Ascension Parish Recycling Road Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Wal-Mart store in Prairieville, parish officials said.

A recycling vehicle will be stationed in the store’s parking lot to accept discarded newspapers, magazines, catalogs, phone books, paperback books, mail, colored paper, envelopes, milk and juice cartons, cardboard, aluminum, tin or bimetal cans and metal lids, and No. 1 through No. 7 plastic containers.

Music in the Park

Cubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band bring their Grammy-winning Zydeco dance style to Jambalaya Park Sunday for the first installment of the Music in the Park free concert series.

The concert is set from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

No concessions will be sold.

The series, which continues each Sunday through March 24, is organized by the Gonzales Mayor’s Council on the Arts.

Healthy eating workshop

The Ascension Parish Council on Aging and Gonzales Senior Center continues its “Ask the Doctor” series at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Lauren Jones, a certified diabetes educator who has nine years of experience in diabetes education and medical nutrition therapy, will discuss “Eating and Cooking Healthy in South Louisiana for Senior Citizens.”

Soccer registration

Registration starts Friday for the Donaldsonville Soccer Club’s spring program for youths ages 3 to 12. The club will host games for participants from April 20 through May 25, with practices starting on April 6.

Registration costs $40 for the eight-week program.
