DONALDSONVILLE — A man seen brandishing a handgun and standing near another man shot in the head was arrested late Wednesday night, Ascension Parish sheriff’s deputies said.

Jeremy James Washington, 32, 506 Catalpa St., Donaldsonville, was booked Wednesday with counts of second-degree murder and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, deputies said in a news release Thursday.

Bail has been set at $425,000 and Washington remains in jail, deputies said.

Deputies said they found Walter Carl Morris Jr., 33, of 304 W. Sixth St., Donaldsonville, wounded by gunfire and lying in Catalpa Street in Donaldsonville shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Washington was standing several feet away from Morris, deputies said. They disarmed Washington and took him into custody, deputies said.

Morris was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries, deputies said.

Deputies said they searched Washington’s home, which is about 30 yards from where the shooting occurred, and seized crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia and cash.
