NAPOLEONVILLE — Assumption Parish sheriff’s deputies searched Thursday for an assailant accused of attacking and robbing an 88-year-old man in a cemetery.
The victim told deputies he was assaulted shortly before 3:58 p.m. Tuesday by an unknown man who put him in a chokehold from behind and took his wallet, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.
The victim was working at St. Ann Catholic Church Cemetery in Napoleonville, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The man had just finished pressure-washing a tomb and was loading equipment into his truck when the robbery happened.
The attacker took the victim’s wallet and then pushed the victim to the ground, deputies said, causing the victim to injure his arm on a tomb.
The attacker then ran away, deputies said.
The victim was taken to Assumption Community Hospital in Napoleonville, treated and released, deputies said.
On Wednesday, sheriff’s investigators recovered an undisclosed “key piece of evidence” that has been sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, deputies added.
Sheriff Mike Waguespack said Thursday the evidence, which he would not describe, was being tested for DNA.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Bayou Region Crime Stoppers at (800) 743-7433.
