CONVENT — St. James Parish’s water systems are free of a deadly brain-eating amoeba found in a neighboring Ascension parish water system, St. James officials said Wednesday.
The state Department of Health and Hospitals conducted water sampling July 28 for the parish’s east and west bank systems and reported the test results Wednesday afternoon.
“This verifies that both water systems meet state and federal requirements,” Parish President Timmy Roussel said.
Brandon Keller, parish spokesman, said recent news about the amoeba being found in the west bank Ascension Consolidated Utility District No. 1 has led to public concerns about St. James’ water.
St. James’ west bank system supplies water to a portion of the ACUD network, but the amoeba was only found in a section supplied by Assumption Parish.
