A Pierre Part driver accused of being on painkillers during an October 2012 fatal crash in Assumption Parish has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide.

District Attorney Ricky Babin said Wednesday that Yancy Hebert entered the plea Monday and was sentenced to 10 years in prison by Judge Thomas Kliebert Jr. of the 23rd Judicial District.

The district encompasses Assumption, Ascension and St. James parishes.

Hebert, who was 46 at the time of the crash on Oct. 25, 2012, had been set for trial Wednesday at the Parish Courthouse in Napoleonville and was facing a count of vehicular homicide.

State Police reported at the time that Hebert’s pickup drifted across the centerline of La. 70 in the Pierre Part area and crashed head-on into a car driven by Miles Liner, 21, of Berwick. Liner died two days later at a hospital, troopers said at the time.

Troopers reported then that Hebert showed signs of intoxication. Babin said Wednesday that later tests showed Hebert was under influence of painkillers.
