GONZALES - An Ascension Parish Council road panel has backed plans to seek bids for road overlay and roundabout projects and to finish separate road widening efforts.
The Transportation Committee approved Tuesday and sent to the full council for consideration Thursday plans to seek bids for Airline Highway turn lanes at La. 621 and La. 929.
The vote was 4-0 with Councilman Dempsey Lambert not present. All other votes Tuesday also were 4-0.
Both projects would add turn lanes from the westbound lanes of La. 621 and La. 929 to the northbound lanes of Airline, said Ben Laurie, chief engineer for the parish.
The committee also agreed to seek bids for this year’s $3.4 million road maintenance project to patch, overlay or reconstruct nearly 8.5 miles of roadway.
The committee agreed to seek a proposal for a feasibility study of a proposed roundabout at Churchpoint and Roddy roads.
Modern roundabouts are designed to allow traffic to move through an intersection without significant stops and to reduce major traffic conflict points.
The Churchpoint project is one of three under review by highway planners.
On another front, the committee agreed with cutting the costs of making Worthey Road a wider, safer two-lane road and clearing and grubbing a section of Roddy Road for future widening.
The parish could get both jobs done for $111,000 under the budgeted cost, officials said.
