A district fire chief with the Gonzales Fire Department was arrested Tuesday on child pornography counts, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
Kristopher Johnson, 35, was booked into parish jail on 11 counts of possession of pornography involving juveniles. Bail has been set at $600,000, jail officials said.
Gonzales Fire Chief Tracey Normand said he was “shocked and saddened” by the circumstances of Johnson’s arrest.
Johnson, who has been with the Fire Department since 2001, is a shift commander, Normand said.
Johnson has been placed on administrative leave with pay, the first process in the civil service law in these matters, pending an investigation, Normand said.
The state Attorney General’s Office was the lead agency in the case with the Sheriff’s Office assisting, said Allison Hudson, public information officer with the Sheriff’s Office.
