GONZALES — Ascension Parish has submitted its redistricting plan to the U.S. Department of Justice, but the public still has time to offer comments on the plan to the federal agency.
The plan establishes boundaries and voting precincts for the 11 Parish Council districts in Ascension, officials said in a news release this week.
The plan, which a parish consultant said was delivered July 5, was developed by the council after several public hearings during the past three months.
Parish officials said they expect to receive preliminary federal clearance of the redistricting plan within the next 60 days.
Once the Justice Department grants approval, the parish would distribute new voter registration cards, parish officials said. If pre-cleared by the federal agency, the plan would establish new districts for council races on the Oct. 22 primary election ballot.
