Crime scene evidence leads to the conclusion that an Assumption Parish man killed his wife before killing himself, Sheriff Mike Waguespack said Thursday.
Also Thursday, preliminary autopsy results confirmed that the husband and wife in Assumption Parish both died of gunshot wounds.
The bodies of Leigh Richardson Bourgeois, 41, and Jamie John Bourgeois, 42, were found by deputies in their home at 2702 La. 308 in Labadieville Wednesday morning.
An employee at a Thibodaux business called the Sheriff’s Office and said that Leigh Bourgeois, who worked at the business, had not shown up for work and wasn’t answering her phone.
The couple’s dog, a boxer named Zeus, also was found shot to death in the home.
“We believe the dog was also shot at the same time or shortly after” the wife was shot, Waguespack said.
“They didn’t have any children, so the dog was part of the family” and was well known to neighbors as was the couple, the sheriff said.
Waguespack said the street is quiet and his office had never had any complaints about the couple.
Waguespack said his office has sent evidence from the crime scene to the State Police Crime Lab to try to get “closure for the family and get more details on precisely what happened.”
