PLATTENVILLE – The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office is offering up to a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of gunmen involved in a shootout late last week at a gas station convenience store.

A 36-year-old bystander was injured during the shootout in the parking lot of the store known as “the Jubilee” at La. 308 and La. 70 Spur shortly before 11:29 p.m. Friday, deputies said in a news release Monday.

The shots grazed the man’s hand and abdomen and hit his buttocks, deputies said. Three parked vehicles were also hit by stray bullets, deputies said.

Sheriff Mike Waguespack said Monday it appears the dispute was between groups from Paincourtville and Labadieville.

He said 10 spent casings found at the scene – for a rifle and a pistol — indicate at least two shooters were involved.

Waguespack said a convenience store employee turned out the lights to the canopy over the fuel pumps shortly before the shooting occurred, making subsequent identification of those involved difficult.

He said the employee was trying to disperse the crowd when it appeared a fight was about to occur.

While deputies investigated the crime scene late Friday and early Saturday, a vehicle stopped and four occupants began screaming at a group of witnesses being detained, deputies said.

The two men and two youths returned to the vehicle and sped away. Deputies said they chased down the vehicle on La. 1 and arrested or cited the persons.

Investigators said they determined that they were not involved in the shootout.
