Low-income residents in St. James Parish may be eligible to receive assistance on their utility bills.

Parish President Timmy Roussel said the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is a grant program administered through the parish’s Department of Human Resources that provides assistance to low-income families through the Louisiana Association of Community Action Partnerships Inc.

The program is available to individuals with a monthly income not exceeding $1,719 or families who make less than $4,562, depending upon the size of the family.

Residents seeking assistance must fill out an application and provide documentation such as birth dates, Social Security cards, proof of income and a copy of the highest energy bill over the past year. Applications are available by appointment only and will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 8 a.m. on Feb. 19. Residents should call (225) 562-2201 to schedule an appointment.

All applicants must be residents of St. James Parish who have an active account with a participating utility company.
