A two-car accident in Gonzales on Sunday night sent five people to two area hospitals with two of them in critical condition, according to the Gonzales Police Department.

The accident at the corner of Airline Highway and La. 429 occurred about 7 p.m. and involved a 2013 Nissan Altima and a 2001 GMC Yukon, according to a police news release.

The driver of the Yukon was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales with minor injuries. The four occupants of the Altima were taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. Two of the passengers were listed in critical condition, one in serious condition and one had minor injuries.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Police did say that the Yukon struck the Altima on the driver’s side.
