VACHERIE — Construction delays will mean kindergarten and pre-kindergarten students at Vacherie Elementary School will start Aug. 22, St. James Parish Schools Superintendent Lonnie Luce said Friday.

Students attending first- through sixth-grade classes at Vacherie Elementary will start Monday with the rest of the district, he said.

“We put the intercom system in today,” Luce said Friday. “That was one of the biggest issues. The new transformer will go in Monday, and the flooring can’t be installed until that goes in.”

The St. James Parish school is gaining a classroom addition to accommodate students from the now-closed Vacherie Primary School, which enrolled students in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade.

Luce said any instruction time lost would be made up in small increments during the school year.

The system also replaced Vacherie Elementary’s cafetorium, Luce said.
