DONALDSONVILLE — A Donaldsonville man died Friday when he rear-ended an 18-wheeler that slowed to make a left-hand turn, State Police Troop A reported.
Shortly before 11 a.m., Oscar Bennett III, 30, was driving south on La. 3089 in a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban behind an 18-wheeler driven by Carlos Julien, 57, when the tractor-trailer began to slow. For unknown reasons, Bennett failed to reduce his speed and struck the trailer of the 18-wheeler, Trooper 1st Class Bryan Lee, spokesman for Troop A, said in a news release.
Bennett, who was unrestrained, was pronounced dead at the scene, Lee said.
Julien, who was restrained, was treated at Prevost Memorial Hospital in Donaldsonville for minor injuries.
Although impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash, a toxicology sample was taken from both drivers and submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis, Lee said.
