A Pierre Part motorcyclist died Friday after a pickup truck turned into his path on La. 70 near Church Street in lower St. Martin Parish, a State Police spokesman said.

Tressi Coupel, 27, was driving west on La. 70 in a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado in a slight right curve when he started to turn left into a private drive, said Master Trooper Brooks David.

Coupel turned into the path of an eastbound 2013 Suzuki GSXR motorcycle driven by 26-year-old Blake Melancon, the trooper said.

Melancon applied the brakes on the motorcycle but was unable to avoid impact and struck the right side of Coupel’s vehicle, David said.

Coupel, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. Melancon was wearing a DOT approved helmet, but suffered critical injuries. He was transported by Air-Med to Our Lady of Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge where he later died, David said.

Impairment is not suspected to have been a contributing factor in the crash, however; toxicology samples were obtained from Melancon and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, David said. Coupel was given a chemical breath test and found not to be impaired.

Coupel, also of Pierre Part, was cited with failure to yield, but further charges could be filed at a later date. This accident remains under investigation.
