Hearing-impaired children and the children of hearing-impaired parents are invited to attend a first-ever camp created for this group in Ascension Parish.

Kidz Kamp Fun Day will feature fishing, dancing, swimming and water balloons, event organizer Paula Rodriguez said.

Andrea Sonnier, Miss Capital City, who is deaf, will be on hand to inaugurate the camp, set from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 42437 La. 931, Gonzales.

The event is sponsored by Deaf Focus Services, a new agency providing counseling and family and community support for families with deaf children or deaf parents, she said.

Ready Communities

A committee working to enhance Donaldsonville’s chances of economic development is meeting Thursday to get input from residents and the business community.

Donaldsonville is one of eight municipalities accepted into the Louisiana Economic Development Ready Communities program.

The program offers customized training, community research data, strategic planning assistance and a community visit by a professional mentor, committee co-chairwoman Glenda Shaheen said.

Business leaders are invited to a noon meeting at the Lemann Memorial Center in Donaldsonville and residents are asked to attend a 6 p.m. meeting that same day. Meals will be served at both meetings, Shaheen said.

Punt, Pass and Kick set

The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition canceled due to rain has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, event organizer Mark Peters said.

Boys and girls ages 6 to 15 are invited to take part in the free football skills competition. The event will be held in the parking lot next to Spartan Stadium on Burnside Avenue in Gonzales. Call (225) 647-3927.

Dutchtown Prep Week

Dutchtown High School Prep Week is scheduled for Thursday to Aug. 2.

During Prep Week, students will be asked to pay a $20 registration fee, purchase physical education uniforms and pick up class schedules.

Seniors are scheduled to attend at 8 a.m. Thursday; juniors are asked to attend July 29; sophomores, Aug. 1; and freshmen, Aug. 2.

Farmapalozza at library

The Ascension Parish Library is marking the end of its summer reading program with “Farmapalooza.”

The 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. programs, for children in pre-kindergarten through first grade, are scheduled for Tuesday at the Gonzales branch, Wednesday in Galvez, Thursday in Donaldsonville and July 29 at the Dutchtown facility.

All teens are invited to celebrate the end of the summer at the library’s beach party in Donaldsonville on Monday, Dutchtown on Tuesday, Galvez on July 27 and Gonzales on July 29. Call for times.
