Photos: St. James bonfires to light up Christmas Eve _lowres

Advocate staff file photo by SCOTT THRELKELD – Children play on the Mississippi River levee in Lutcher on Dec. 18, 2015, near the flag-topped log pyramid erected by the Poche family for the Christmas Eve bonfires.

The Christmas Eve bonfires in St. James Parish will light up at 7 p.m. after meteorologists with the National Weather Service told parish officials conditions should be favorable.

Individuals interested in attending the lighting are encouraged to arrive before 6 p.m., said Brandon Keller, a spokesman for the parish government. Parking will be available in lots along Highway 641, about a three- to four-block walk from the levee, Keller said.

“If you’re interested in driving through, take Highway 3213 to Highway 44 (River Road) and exit just before the bridge,” Keller wrote in an email. “You can drive along River Road through Gramercy, Lutcher and Paulina to see the burning bonfires.”
