A hospitalized man who told police officers he and his wife had been “jumped” and beaten up at a party in Gonzales this week actually beat his wife and was injured in the process, city police officers said Friday.

Officers arrested Gregory Alix Jr., 29, 1125 S. Hempshire Ave., Gonzales, on a count of felony second-degree battery after he was released from St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Officers had been called to the hospital’s emergency room about 12:36 a.m. Wednesday after Alix and his wife showed up at the hospital in Gonzales, police said in a news release Friday.

Alix, who had a cut to his right hand and scratches on his face, told officers that five people had beaten his wife and him but was not able to say where the party happened or give any information on the purported attackers, police said.

The wife, whose face was badly beaten, gave officers a similar story about an attack but said it happened at their home, police said.

Police officers said they later determined that Alix attacked his wife and he was injured when she tried to defend herself.

The wife, whom police did not name, was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge due to the seriousness of her injuries, police said.
