LUTCHER — Unless classroom construction at Vacherie Elementary School is complete by the Aug. 8 opening of classes, prekindergarten and kindergarten students will have to “delay entry” a week or two until their rooms are ready, St. James School Superintendent Alonzo Luce said.

Students in first through sixth grades at Vacherie Elementary will be able to use classrooms on the other side of the building, Luce told School Board members during their meeting Tuesday.

A new auditorium/lunchroom facility at the school remains under construction, Luce said.

Other board action included:

JOINT MEETING SET: School Board President Charles Nailor Sr. announced a special joint meeting of the School Board and Parish Council has been scheduled for Aug. 18 in Lutcher.

Nailor said he thought meeting with the Parish Council would be a good opportunity for both bodies to “bridge the gap that we have.”

School Board and Parish Council members have been at odds over creation of a comprehensive plan to direct the parish’s growth during the next 20 years.

The plan would regulate the location of schools, residential areas and industrial sites, board member George Nassar said after the meeting.

The board and council also have clashed in public meetings over sales tax exemptions for steel-manufacturer Nucor Corp.

POLICY MANUAL: The board approved the 2011-12 student policy manual.

GRAMERCY ELEMENTARY: The board gave its OK to nearly $153,000 worth of additions to Gramercy Elementary School. and renovations to the school’s existing multipurpose building.
