Mark Peters, of Gonzales, one of three candidates for the District 3 seat on the Ascension Parish School Board, announced Tuesday he is withdrawing from the race.

“We were unable to reach our fundraising goal and (I) will not continue to seek office,” Peters said in a statement.

Peters runs a nonprofit organization, Hope Youth Development, that provides opportunities for youth in Ascension Parish to take part in a wide variety of nontraditional sports.

The School Board’s District 3 includes parts of the Gonzales, Darrow and Geismar areas. The incumbent, Richard Brown, is not running for re-election.

The two candidates remaining in the race for the District 3 seat are Julie Blouin, of Gonzales, and Nathaniel “Nat” Stephens, of Geismar. The election is Nov. 4.
