La. 3089 and La. 70 in Ascension Parish, blocked briefly due to a train derailment Friday afternoon, were open again before 5 p.m. Friday, according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The derailment posed no chemical or other safety hazard to the public, authorities said.

The derailed car was empty, and Union Pacific sent crews to get the train back on the tracks, said Rick Webre, Ascension Parish’s director of homeland security.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office reported the derailment shortly before 3 p.m. Friday.

The rail line affected is located near where La. 70 and La. 3089 split by the CF Industries plant outside Donaldsonville and just west of the Sunshine Bridge.
