GONZALES — Ascension Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested a Gonzales-area man Thursday after finding 31 marijuana plants behind and inside his apartment.
Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Tony Bacala said in a news release Thursday that deputies had been receiving tips about drug sales from the Ascension Town Homes apartment complex on Cannon Road near Gonzales.
Sheriff’s detectives spotted Richard W. Dent Jr., 42, 41063 Cannon Road, Apt. 1902, Gonzales, about 7:55 a.m. Thursday smoking a marijuana blunt in the complex parking lot, Bacala said.
Dent put the blunt out behind his back as detectives approached him but later handed it over, Bacala said.
Once inside Dent’s home where his three young children were living detectives found a potted marijuana plant near an air-conditioner unit and another 30 plants out the back door, Bacala said.
Dent was arrested and booked into Ascension Parish Detention Center near Donaldsonville with single counts of second-offense possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and cultivation of marijuana and three counts of illegal use of a controlled substance in the presence of persons younger than 17, Bacala said.
The children were given to a family member.
Dent remained in parish jail Thursday afternoon awaiting the setting of bail, Bacala said.
