A 56-year-old Gonzales man is accused of sexually assaulting a woman who was staying with him and his wife at their home so she could attend an area church.

Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley said detectives arrested Carl McKinley, 38373 La. 30, late Tuesday on counts of third-degree rape and sexual battery after investigating a sexual assault that occurred earlier in the day.

According to investigators, the 24-year-old victim had been staying with McKinley and his wife at their home on La. 30 for the past week so she could attend a particular church in the area.

The victim, who was awakened by McKinley sexually assaulting her, left the home and walked to a local hospital, Wiley said.

McKinley was arrested without incident and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail, where his bail was set at $150,000 by Judge Tess Stromberg.

McKinley has 13 prior arrests, including a 2003 rape. Other arrests include aggravated battery, assault and criminal mischief, the Sheriff’s Office said.
