LUTCHER — No one was injured in a fire that destroyed two buildings in a public housing apartment complex in Lutcher on Tuesday, said St. James Parish Sheriff Willy Martin.
Two other buildings in the four-building Brooks Apartments complex, 2627 Brooks Apartment St., were severely damaged by smoke and will have to be gutted and rebuilt, Wiley said.
Firefighters from four volunteer fire departments in St. James Parish, assisted by firefighters from St. John the Baptist Parish, responded to the fire that began about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Wiley said.
He said it appears “it’s probably a fire that started in a kitchen with a pan left on the stove.”
Wiley said he knows that at least four families were displaced from their apartments. He said he was unsure how many people were affected by the fire.
He said the Red Cross has been contacted to provide assistance to families displaced by the fire.
