A man trying to push a shopping cart across Airline Highway in Ascension Parish was hit and killed Thursday night, State Police reported.

The man was pushing the cart across the northbound lanes of Airline south of La. 74 near a commercial area just outside Gonzales shortly before 8 p.m., troopers said in a statement Friday morning.

Rodney Marchand, 56, of Baton Rouge, who was driving a 2011 Ford Escape, hit the man as Marchand was driving northbound on Airline, troopers said.

Airline is a four-lane highway in that area with a grassy median.

The Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office declared the man dead at the scene, troopers said. Pending notification of next of kin, troopers have not identified the man.

Impairment due to drugs or alcohol use is not suspected of Marchand and he was not cited in the crash, troopers said.

Troopers said impairment is unknown for the dead man. A toxicology sample was taken and given to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
