A Gonzales man died Sunday from injuries he received Friday in a crash on La. 44.

Clifford Rice, 85, was headed north on La. 44 in a 2000 Dodge Caravan behind Keith McLin, 48, who was also driving north in a 2008 Dodge Ram, said State Police spokesman Bryan Lee.

McLin came to a stop as he prepared to turn left into a private drive when, for unknown reasons, Rice failed to stop and ran into the back of McLin’s truck.

Rice was not wearing a seat belt and suffered serious injuries in the crash, Lee said. He was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, where he died two days later.

McLin, of Livingston, did have on his seat belt and was not injured.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, Lee said. A toxicology sample was taken from Rice and submitted to the State Police Crime Lab. McLin was given a chemical breath test and showed no signs of impairment, Lee said.
