A caretaker at an assisted-living facility has been arrested on cruelty to the infirm for not reporting or seeking treatment for an elderly resident who suffered multiple broken bones in a fall, the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office reports.

Valencia Benjamin, 30, of Donaldsonville, was booked Wednesday into the Assumption Parish Detention Center and was released on a $5,000 bond, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

The elderly woman, who lives in Assumption Parish, was brought to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center on June 5 for treatment of severe bruising of her body and torso; medical staff contacted the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office, according to the release.

An investigation determined that Benjamin, the employee present when the patient fell and was injured, didn’t report the injuries or seek medical treatment for her, the Sheriff’s Office report says.
