DARROW — Ascension Parish sheriff’s investigators believe a man slain on Monday was shot at least once, not stabbed as earlier reported, authorities said Tuesday.
An autopsy is planned Wednesday morning for Darren Keith Smylie Jr., 19, of Darrow, at a private forensic lab in Lafayette, said Lt. Col. Paul Robert, chief of criminal operations for the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Robert said initial reports from family were that Smylie was stabbed but detectives later saw that he was likely shot. Investigators expect a definitive answer on the cause of death after the autopsy.
Deputies have reported that Smylie’s father found his son dead in their home at 39068 Venus Ave., after returning from work at 5 p.m. Monday.
They live in a neighborhood surrounded by immediate and extended family.
Robert said Tuesday detectives are “following all possible leads” but do not have a motive for the slaying nor suspects.
Detectives have also taken Smylie’s computer, Robert said, but have not reported any results from its seizure.
An aspiring rapper and disc jockey planning on making a CD, Smylie’s Facebook page has hip-hop lyrics and videos posted to it.
Smylie graduated from St. Amant High School two years ago, where he played basketball and football, family members have said.
Smylie worked as a longshoreman and Monday was his off day, family members have said.
