GONZALES — Law enforcement agencies in Iberville and Ascension parishes are asking the public to help locate a half-dozen women they believe to be involved in a rash of baby formula thefts from area supermarkets.
Chief Deputy Tony Bacala of the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Friday cases of formula valued at nearly $1,000 have been taken from two stores, and a theft attempt at a third store was foiled.
As part of a joint investigation, detectives identified Cynthia Marie Johnson, 43, 4702 Lavey Lane, Lot 3, Baker, as one of six women believed to be involved in the thefts. Bacala said he believes the cases of baby formula are being stolen and resold.
Ascension and Iberville sheriff’s detectives are working with surrounding jurisdictions in order to identify the others in the group. Supermarkets in neighboring jurisdictions have also been victimized by the same group, he said.
Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to contact the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office at (225) 621-4636 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
