Former Ascension Parish Councilman Bryan Melancon has been appointed interim justice of the peace to replace Leroy Laiche Jr., who was removed from office in May.
The state Supreme Court made the appointment of Melancon to the 2nd Justice Court in Ascension Parish on Wednesday.
Melancon, who represented the Gonzales area on the Parish Council until he lost his re-election bid in the fall, will serve as justice of the peace through December.
Laiche, the former two-term 2nd District justice of the peace, was removed from office when the state Supreme Court denied his appeal of a court ruling in March that he was rude to people, improperly handled peace bonds and abused that process.
In accepting the interim appointment, Melancon can’t run in a special election for the position expected this fall. Laiche’s six-year term does not end until Dec. 31, 2020.
