A 21-year-old Mississippi man died Sunday night when his pickup left the road on La. 429 in Ascension Parish and struck a utility pole, police said.

Tyler Talbert, of Toomsuba, Mississippi, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, State Police said in a news release. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office.

The single-vehicle crash occurred just before 10 p.m. on La. 429 east of La. 431 when Talbert failed to make it around a curve in the highway and drove off the road, police said.

Talbert’s passenger also was not wearing a seat belt and received moderate injuries in the crash, according to the report. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash, but a toxicology sample will be taken from Talbert for analysis, State Police said.
