Assumption Parish sheriff’s deputies are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that left a husband and wife and their dog dead Wednesday morning.

Deputies found the bodies of Leigh Richardson Bourgeois, 41, and Jamie John Bourgeois, 42, in their home after a Thibodaux business where Leigh Bourgeois worked called the Sheriff’s Office at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The caller said she had not shown up for work and wasn’t answering her phone, Sheriff Mike Waguespack said.

Waguespack said Wednesday afternoon that the couple died from apparent gunshot wounds inside their home at 2702 La. 308, Labadieville. Their dog, Zeus, a boxer, also was found shot to death.

Waguespack said in a later interview that deputies have spoken with neighbors and family members who said the couple had “some ongoing marital issues.”

The Bourgeoises’ bodies were taken by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office to the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office for autopsies, Waguespack said.

The sheriff said investigators would not speculate about who shot whom until the autopsies were completed.

He said deputies found a handgun near the bodies in the home that is believed to be the murder weapon.

Waguespack added that Zeus was taken to a Thibodaux veterinarian for examination.

“We should be able to give more details to confirm our suspicions in the morning,” Waguespack said.

Neighbors were mourning the death of Leigh Bourgeois on Wednesday.

“She was a loving girl. She loved life. Everybody loved her,” said the longtime neighbors who did not want to identify themselves.
