A small fire broke out around 3 p.m. Friday at the Westlake Chemical plant in Geismar and was extinguished within a half hour but not before smoke wafted across La. 30, causing some traffic delays, according to a news release from the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.

There were no injuries reported and no chemicals burned or released, officials said.

The incident stemmed from a fiberglass pipe that caught fire, said Rick Webre, director of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness for the parish.
