PRAIRIEVILLE — A Gonzales man not wearing his seat belt was killed early Tuesday morning when he was partially ejected from his car as it crashed into a culvert and utility pole off La. 73, according to a Louisiana State Police news release.

The wreck occurred on La. 73 north of Interstate 10 around 2 a.m., the release stated.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Carl McKnight, 22, was driving a 2004 Saturn north on La. 73 north of Interstate 10 when he entered a right-hand curve and ran off the road to the left.

McKnight over-corrected and the vehicle re-entered the roadway and began to rotate clockwise as it crossed the roadway and ran off the road to the right, troopers said.

The car then hit a culvert, vaulted into the air, and struck a utility pole, according to the report.

McKnight was pronounced dead on the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office.

Troopers suspect alcohol to have played a role in the crash and have submitted a sample of McKnight’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory for chemical analysis, troopers said.
