Cherice Harrison-Nelson, Big Queen of the Guardians of the Flame Mardi Gras Indians and founder of the Mardi Gras Indians Hall of Fame, took a taste of Carnival to the New Orleans Women & Children’s Shelter on Jan. 27. She chose that day because it also marked the 85th birthday of Harrison-Nelson’s late husband, Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr. To date, the Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr. Book Club has distributed over 35,000 new books to area children.
