A Jefferson Parish grand jury this week indicted four people in the fatal shooting of a man in Harvey in April.
Jvontae “Tae” Simmons and Dorian “Rasta” Lonzo were each charged Thursday with one count of second-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Stacy Johnson Jr. Simmons, 22, and Lonzo, 20, each face mandatory life imprisonment if they are found guilty as charged.
Meanwhile, Ashley Degree, 25, and Kirklon Boyd, 19, are each charged in the case with obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Prosecutors say Boyd and Degree disposed of weapons used in Johnson’s slaying.
Degree was also charged with illegally possessing a 9mm handgun after having previous cocaine and heroin possession convictions.
Johnson was killed April 7 in a shooting that occurred in the 3700 block of Clover Lane while he was sitting in a car smoking marijuana with a pair of 19-year-old friends, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office has said. One of the friends was wounded by the gunfire.
Simmons was soon arrested in Marrero, and Lonzo was later taken into custody at his home in New Orleans, investigators said.
Authorities have not yet publicly discussed a motive in Johnson’s killing, but Sheriff Newell Normand told reporters back in April that he was sure his detectives would prove a link between the murder and the youths’ marijuana smoking.
