A squabble between next-door neighbors in a Jefferson apartment building turned deadly Friday morning when one shot the other in the groin, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
Frank Stewart, 61, was taken into custody for questioning after the shooting, said Col. John N. Fortunato, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.
The victim, a 54-year-old man whose name has not been released, died at the scene of a single gunshot wound, Fortunato said.
Deputies responded to a report of the shooting about 1:30 a.m., finding the victim lying near the front door of his apartment in the 700 block of Central Avenue.
A witness told investigators the neighbors had “been at odds for quite some time,” Fortunato said.
Just before the shooting, according to the witness, the victim began kicking on the front door of Stewart’s apartment. The witness said he tried to stop the man but was not successful.
The victim continued kicking the door until Stewart opened it and fired one shot, Fortunato said.
Stewart was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center on charges unrelated to the murder, according to jail records.
The Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office will review the case to determine whether Stewart will face charges in the death, Fortunato said.
