An attack on a busy street in Terrytown late Monday morning left one man dead, another wounded and grieving relatives crying out for answers.

Police said 23-year-old Jacquez Young, of Avondale, was shot in the head and killed when a white Ford F-150 pulled up next to his teal 2008 Audi on Whitney Avenue at Hamilton Road about 11:35 a.m. and one or more occupants unleashed an unknown number of bullets.

Young’s passenger was shot in the side and taken to Interim LSU Hospital in New Orleans with wounds that were not life-threatening.

The white truck headed toward Stumpf Boulevard and disappeared.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Col. John Fortunato said authorities were searching for a suspect or suspects in the shooting.

An hour after the homicide, Renell Wilson was standing at the scene, watching crime scene technicians work around sneakers and clothes from one of the victims that were still scattered in the street. Wilson said she was a friend of both men and had seen them in a nearby store minutes before the attack.

“Everything was cool,” she said. “Why this happened, I don’t know. Everybody’s hurt.”

Wilson said Young was the father of two young girls, one 3 and one 7 months. She believed he worked as a delivery truck driver.

At 1:10 p.m., a tow truck arrived to remove the dead man’s car, and JPSO deputies began pulling down crime scene tape. As the deputies left, a woman arrived in a silver SUV asking what had happened to her child’s father. Another woman on the street told her he was dead.

She clutched her hair and, fighting through tears, asked another question: “Why they killed him? Why?”

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office asked anyone with information about the incident to contact its Investigations Bureau at (504) 364-5300 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
