Political newcomer Melinda Doucet had a narrow lead over Jefferson Parish School Board member Mark Jacobs as the first precincts reported results in the school board’s District 7 race Tuesday.
Doucet had 2,050 votes with 14 out of 33 precincts reporting, giving her a 23-vote lead over Jacobs. Trailing both those candidates was Jo Ann Scott with 590 votes.
Jacobs is backed by the parish’s business community while Doucet is supported by the Jefferson Federation of Teachers, the union that represents the parish’s educators. Scott has made opposition to Common Core a central element of her campaign.
Doucet had about 44 percent of the vote while Jacobs was only about half a percentage point behind. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, the race will go into a run-off on Dec. 6.
