A 29-year-old man was killed and an 8-year-old girl was wounded Thursday night during a shooting in Marrero.
Gunfire erupted shortly before 9 p.m. in the 1100 block of Dimarco Drive, according to Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
He said that when deputies arrived at the scene, they found Anderson Charles Massey III lying in a driveway on the same block where he lived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An 8-year-old girl who had been playing outside with a friend at the time of the shooting caught a stray bullet in her upper back, Fortunato said.
The girl was transported to a hospital, where she was in stable condition, according to Fortunato.
Friends at the scene identified her to nola.com as Anaya Thomas.
Residents in the area said they initially thought the gunfire was fireworks but realized it was something more sinister when they saw two men sprinting down the street after Massey, according to Fortunato. Bystanders said at least one of the men was firing a gun.
After the shooting, someone stole Massey’s vehicle, a gray Pontiac, Fortunato said.
A black Audi trailed the Pontiac as it drove away, he said.
Deputies initially thought the motive for the shooting might have been carjacking, but Fortunato said a search Friday found “a substantial amount of marijuana, assorted narcotics, several firearms and U.S. currency.”
One of the guns recovered was stolen, according to Fortunato.
He said Massey had a record of arrests for possession of marijuana, illegal use of a firearm in the presence of narcotics and simple battery.
“We had initially considered this to be a carjacking because the victim’s vehicle was taken during the incident. However, we aren’t ruling out the possibility it was drug-related,” Fortunato said.
He said the Sheriff’s Office had yet to make any arrests or name any suspects in the shooting.
