The driver of a tractor that was hit by an intoxicated motorist early Saturday morning following a Carnival parade died late Saturday night, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Don Dauzat, 52, of Marrero, was operating one of a group of tractors being repositioned following Friday night’s parades, said JPSO spokesman Glen T. Boyd.

Dauzat was crossing Lapalco Boulevard at Paxton Street about 2:50 a.m. when he was hit by a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Michael Burrie, 54, of Gretna. Burrie had disregarded a red light, Boyd said.

The tractor rolled over, and Dauzat was thrown into the road. He was taken to Interim LSU Hospital in critical condition.

Burrie was initially booked on counts of driving while intoxicated, reckless operation and vehicular negligent injury. After Dauzat died, he was rebooked with vehicular homicide. His bail was set at $150,000.
