Jefferson Parish announced the closure of the Lapalco Bridge because of ice on the steel bridge deck.
The parish said the National Weather Service is predicting frozen rain and sleet to begin between 11 a.m. and noon and continue through the day. A a hard freeze is expected tonight, when low temperatures will be near 27. With 30 mph gusts of wind, the wind chill will be as low as minus 15 degrees.
Schools, court and municipalities are closed on the east and west bank for the weather, and officials are recommending people stay at home, if possible.
“The storm will be here soon and I strongly urge everyone to stay off the roads,” Kenner Mayor Michael Yenni said in a news release. “Please remain alert and take precautionary measures.”
Kenner is under a winter storm warning through 6 a.m. Wednesday and, like the parish government, warned of potential power outages.
“Ice accumulations of a quarter of an inch have the potential to cause significant problems with power lines and tree limbs becoming too heavy to maintain their integrity,” the city news release said.
