Kenner mayoral candidate Vinny Mendoza, one of three challengers to incumbent Mayor Ben Zahn, has been disqualified from the race, court documents show.

The suit against Mendoza alleged that he hasn't lived in the city the three years required for mayoral candidates.

Contacted last week, Mendoza said that he wasn't aware of that provision in the city charter. Mendoza previously lived in Tangipahoa Parish.

Judge Lee Faulkner of 24th Judicial District Court ruled Friday afternoon that Mendoza had not met the requirements for the office and would be disqualified.

That leaves the race with three candidates: Zahn, Al Morella and Dona Reynaud.

Morella is a Jefferson Parish government watcher who is often critical of public officials and who has run for Kenner mayor before.

Reynaud is the wife of current Councilman Keith Reynaud, who is not seeking re-election. She and her husband have both clashed with Zahn over a number of issues.
