A man riding his bicycle on the Mississippi River levee in Bridge City on Wednesday spotted the body of a man who had been shot to death and left along the river bank.
Authorities identified the dead man as Nicholas Rogers, 29, of Bridge City.
An employee of Banting’s Nursery in the 3400 block of River Road called 911 about 12:30 p.m. after the cyclist ran across the street to tell the nursery’s staff about seeing a body. Employees ran to the levee to see if the man was OK but quickly realized he was dead.
“It was really spooky and unsettling to see his eyes open,” said one nursery employee, who asked that she not be identified.
The employee and others who live in the area said they did not recognize the man. Rogers had been shot multiple times, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Col. John Fortunato said.
Crime-scene investigators found several shell casings on the scene, but no one reported hearing any gunshots Wednesday afternoon, leading to speculation that Rogers had been killed sometime overnight.
“If he was there yesterday, someone would have seen him yesterday,” the nursery employee said, noting that the levee has heavy foot traffic from runners and cyclists.
Anyone with information about the killing is asked to contact Detective Michael Patrick at (504) 364-5300 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
