The Kenner Police Department is investigating the death of an inmate who suffered a medical emergency and was transported to a hospital Sunday, according to spokesman Lt. Brian McGregor.

Brian Shaw, 40, of New Orleans, was arrested by Kenner police about 10:30 a.m. Saturday due to outstanding warrants from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. He was accused of committing monetary instrument abuse and bank fraud.

Just before noon Sunday, Shaw became unresponsive while in a jail cell awaiting transport, McGregor said.

Emergency medical technicians tried to revive him and transported him to Ochsner Medical Center-Kenner, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be performed by the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office in an effort to determine the cause of death.
