The list of items up for sale is endless at the upcoming Nearly New Sale sponsored by Shir Chadash Conservative Congregation. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday at the Metairie synagogue, 3737 West Esplanade Ave.

Items including books, toys, housewares, clothing, jewelry, antiques, sporting goods, Mardi Gras trinkets, art and furniture will be up for grabs at the event, which has been held since 1960. Proceeds will go to the synagogue for its educational and community programs.

A half-price sale of remaining items will be held at 10 a.m. on July 17. Any unsold items will be donated to Bridge House, Jefferson Parish Friends of the Library and other local charities.

New Toastmasters Club

Mohamad Qayoom recently wrote to say that a new Toastmasters Club has formed, with meetings on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at the North Kenner Library, 630 West Esplanade Ave.

“The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, self-confidence and personal growth,” Qayoom said.

Genealogical group to meet

The Jefferson Genealogical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. July 14 at John Calvin Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 4201 Transcontinental Drive, Metairie.

Casey Stuart, a local historian and expert on preservation, will present a program titled “Lost New Orleans: Below Canal Street.” Stuart will show photos of buildings that no longer exist below Canal Street, in the Marigny, the Bywater and other neighborhoods.

Marine Auxiliary lauds volunteer

The Paul E. Boyd unit 579 of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary recently presented a plaque to Patricia Hane, naming her the group’s Volunteer Angel of the Year for 2015-16.

Hane has helped take gifts to local veterans at the Southeast War Veterans Home. She also has helped with the Toys for Tots campaign, and assists at the Marine Corps League bingo every week.

Hane has been treasurer of Marine Corps League Auxiliary since 2009 and again will serve in that capacity for 2016-17.
